Illyés Gyula: A found caravan journal (Megtalált karaván-napló in English)

Megtalált karaván-napló (Hungarian)

Már csak az iránytű bizakodott,

hebegett: adott

hűdött nyelvével jelet: valahol

van, ami válaszol.

Mentünk tovább

megint egy napnyi sivatagon át.

Ékírásos ábráival

egy sziklafal.

Sor sorra zagyván, konokon:

ráncok egy őrült homlokon.

Vén, hajdani

Idő vivódik itt.

Semmit se bír már mondani.

Így csak a szél visít.

A szempillán homok. Az izzadt ujjak közt homok.

Homok, ha összeér a fog.

Megöltük út-tudó tevénket.

Ettünk egy utolsó ebédet.

A found caravan journal (English)

By now, only the hopeful compass gave,

with palsied tongue, a faltering wave:

somewhere out there's a hit:

something had answered it.

We moved again

through yet another day's worth of the plain.

Rock face, on it, to grace some cliffs,

some hieroglyphs.

Stubborn gibberish, row on row the ticks:

like wrinkles on the brows of lunatics.

Weather of yore:

it struggles in the fray.

For lack of words, it speaks no more.

Only the wind can squeal this way.

Sand on lashes, between the sweaty fingers,

and where teeth touch: still more lingers.

We killed our camel, that knew the way.

We ate a final lunch today.
