Illyés Gyula: Siblings (Testvérek in English)

Portre of Illyés Gyula
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Testvérek (Hungarian)

Három nap néztem volna csak szemed

árnyékos völgyét, szemöldöködet,

a pillák sűrű sását, mely között

az eleven kis vadvíz incseleg,

villantja fényét, fürge terveit,

sikos halacskák szökdeléseit -

Három nap néztem volna hallgatag

az egyiket, aztán a másikat.

S töltöttem volna három új napot

csak nézni némán a hű hajlatot:

ruhád alól kisejlő kebledet,

a csillagot, mely rajta szendereg,

s készül, fényküllőt ütve lágy mezén,

már tündökölni sorsom éjjelén -

Három nap néztem volna hallgatag

az egyiket, aztán a másikat.

S elég lett volna újonnan nekem

csak legeltetni, itatni szemem

szép szárba szökkent páros térdeden,

melyek hivalgón, mégis derűsen,

mint fényes kapu kettős szárnyai

tán bíztatták már egymást nyílani -

Három nap néztem volna hallgatag

az egyiket, aztán a másikat.

Az enyhe hőben, amely szelíden

testedből áradt, tested fényiben

elültem volna, napon a beteg,

lesve, mellemben hogyan bizsereg,

hogy' oldódik a fájdalom, hogyan

oszlana már a test is boldogan

el, föl egy könnyebb táj felhőibe,

mely maga már az altató mese -

És lettem volna gyermek, gyermeked,

hogy, ha ölellek: úgy öleljelek,

hogy mit szerelem csak sokára ad,

halljam már most vígasztaló szavad.

Fi a lánytestvért, - úgy öleltelek,

ős vágy ízével enyhítve a bűnt,

így aludtam el, - leghűbb kedvesed

mire az első éjjel tovatünt.

Siblings (English)

I could have looked for three days at your eyes’

shadowy valleys and at your eyebrows,

lashes like sedges, and in between them

the tiny teasing lively rivulet

that glints and hints at plans of nimbleness

And slippery little fishes’ leaps and dives –

I could have looked for three days quietly,

first at the one, and then the other one.

And then I could have spent three brand new days

looking just mutely at the tender curve:

the hint beneath your garment of your breast,

the star on it which now is slumbering

as it prepares, tightening a spoke of light

on veil of silk, to gleam throughout my night.

I could have looked for three days quietly,

first at the one, and then the other one.

And then again it would have been enough

to let my eyes go grazing, drinking in

your knees, soaring to legs the pair of them,

which, showing off, though somewhat awkwardly,

like twin leaves on a shining double gate,

each urging now its pair to opening –

I could have looked for three days quietly,

first at the one and then the other one.

I could have, like the sick do in the sun,

sit in that warming gentle heat which flowed

from you, and in your body’s radiance,

observing then the tingling of the pain,

and how it does dissolve inside my breast,

how then the body gladly would decay

among a lighter region’s clouds above

and this then is the sleep-inducing tale -

And then I would have been a child, your child,

embracing you with just such an embrace.

To have right now what love will only give

with time: to hear your words consoling me.

Brother to sister, such was my embrace,

Ancient desire lessening the sin,

such was my way to sleep - your truest love -

and so the first night vanished.
