Öreg színész (Hungarian)

Még ruganyosan jár-kel a szinen.
Hány éves, azt nem tudja senkisem.

A maszkja még, ha úgy kell, fiatal
S maradt számára is még diadal.

Az öltözőben sokszor elmereng,
Hogy hova tűnt a régi regement?

A régi tapsok forró zápora
Az ő fejére nem hull már soha.

A régi cimborák és szeretők
Nyugdíjba vagy a sírba mentek ők.

A régi koszorúk babérja int,
De nem találja régi álmait.

Az élete lejátszott, únt szerep
S a nagy süllyesztő egyre közelebb.

Az örök súgó azt susogja: Csend!
S négy deszka közt pihen meg odalent!

The old player (English)

His step has spring in it when on the stage.
How old is he? No one can guess his age.

With paint he can be young, it can be done,
Some triumphs came and some will maybe come.

Often backstage he's brooding while he waits
about what happened to all his army mates.

Applauses once were hot, like summer rain,
Upon his head they’ll never fall again.

Pals of the past, the lovers - old lament -
Retired all, or to the grave they went.

Old laurels won, they beckon him, cajole,
Yet dreams he had by now he can't recall.

Life's role he played: it was a boring part,
The trap is nearing, soon he must depart.

"Quiet!", he hears, the Prompter's voice is low:
Rest waits for him between four boards below.
