Juhász Gyula: After the resurrection (Föltámadás után in English)

Portre of Juhász Gyula
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Föltámadás után (Hungarian)

Negyven napig még a földön maradt
És nézte az elmúló tájakat.

És mondta: Ez Jordán, ez Golgota.
Itt verejték volt és emitt csoda.

És nézte, hogy a játszó gyermekek
Homokba írnak nagy kereszteket.

És nézte, hogy a sírján csöndesen
Megnő a fű és borostyán terem.

Aztán megállt a Tábor tetején.
Oly könnyű volt a szíve, mint a fény.

Mint pelyhet, érezte az életet
És derűsen és némán mennybe ment.

After the resurrection (English)

Just forty days more was his earthly stay,
He saw the lands and watched them fade away.

He said: here's Jordan, Golgotha's yonder.
Here was some sweating, yon there was wonder.

He watched the children play - a tiny band -,
Drawing big crosses with sticks on the sand.

And by his graveside he took time to view
How silently the grass and ivy grew.

He stopped on Tabor and his heart was light.
It was as weightless as a shaft of light.

Life felt like fluff: all lightness for the Lord,
And cheerful, soundless, he rose heavenward.
