Gabor Kiraly: The Prodigality (A tékozlás in English)

Portre of Gabor Kiraly

A tékozlás (Hungarian)

Tékozló reggel
aszkéta éj után.

A remény nem kelt fel,
s mi bámulunk bután,
hogy elpocsékoltunk
újabb csillagokat,
s álmatlan aludtuk
át a látomásokat.

Terített asztalon
a díszes étkészlet,
cifra tányérunkon
nyers, vonagló élet.

Lett volna jobb is,
ha van látó szemünk,
jövőszinopszis
nem nekünk; velünk,
ha nem vártunk volna
addig a nagy tervvel
a megváltó szóra
míg eljön a reggel.

És lassan vége,
nincs több tervezés.
Aki Írásban ígérte,
az már csak kevés
figyelmet szentel
a mi dolgainknak
 - nem vettük észre,
jaj, nem vettük észre -,
hogy szíve szerelme
utolsó cseppivel
együtt enyészve
elpusztult a holnap.

The Prodigality (English)

Prodigal morning
follows ascetic night.

Hope is still asleep,
we're trying to figure out
how this new batch of stars
were wasted on us too:
we lay in twisted farce
and slept the visions through.

Here set upon the table
are silver fork and knife,
and on the cloth a plateful
of raw and writhing life

It would have gone smoother
if we had eyes to see
previews of a future
without ourselves; if we
had only planned in time
before it all went wrong,
if only redemption chimed
before the break of dawn.

It all comes to a close,
the plans, the whole picture,
whoever made all those
promises in Scripture
is now hardly involved
in our lives or deaths
- we just didn't see it,
oh no, we didn't see it -
declining alongside
those very final dregs
of his own true love
tomorrow too had died.
