Kosztolányi Dezső: Breakfast in autumn (Őszi reggeli in English)

Portre of Kosztolányi Dezső

Back to the translator

Őszi reggeli (Hungarian)

Ezt hozta az ősz. Hűs gyümölcsöket

üvegtálon. Nehéz, sötét-smaragd

szőlőt, hatalmas, jáspisfényü körtét,

megannyi dús, tündöklő ékszerét.

Vízcsöpp iramlik egy kövér bogyóról,

és elgurul, akár a brilliáns.

A pompa ez, részvéttelen, derült,

magába-forduló tökéletesség.

Jobb volna élni. Ámde túl a fák már

aranykezükkel intenek nekem.

Breakfast in autumn (English)

Look what autumn has brought us. Fruit cooling

on glass. Heavy grapes of sombre emerald,

Enormous pears of jasper coloured light,

a wealth of lush and sparkling jewelry.

A dew drop trickles down from a plump bud

and rolls away like any precious stone.

Sheer pomp perfection that requires nothing

and no-one, delighting solely in itself.

Better to live. But already, in the distance,

The trees are calling me with golden hands.
