Kosztolányi Dezső: I’m dreaming of coloured inks (Mostan színes tintákról álmodom in English)

Mostan színes tintákról álmodom (Hungarian)

Mostan színes tintákról álmodom.

Legszebb a sárga. Sok-sok levelet
e tintával írnék egy kisleánynak,
egy kisleánynak, akit szeretek.
Krikszkrakszokat, japán betűket írnék,
s egy kacskaringós, kedves madarat.
És akarok még sok másszínű tintát,
bronzot, ezüstöt, zöldet, aranyat,
és kellene még sok száz és ezer,
és kellene még aztán millió:
tréfás-lila, bor-színű, néma-szürke,
szemérmetes, szerelmes, rikitó,
és kellene szomorú-viola
és téglabarna és kék is, de halvány,
akár a színes kapuablak árnya
augusztusi délkor a kapualján.
És akarok még égő-pirosat,
vérszínűt, mint a mérges alkonyat,
és akkor írnék, mindig-mindig írnék.
Kékkel húgomnak, anyámnak arannyal:
arany-imát írnék az én anyámnak,
arany-tüzet, arany-szót, mint a hajnal.
És el nem unnám, egyre-egyre írnék
egy vén toronyba, szünes-szüntelen.
Oly boldog lennék, Istenem, de boldog.

Kiszínezném vele az életem.

I’m dreaming of coloured inks (English)

I’m dreaming of coloured inks.

Yellow's the nicest. In letters galore
I'd use that to write with, to write to a girlie,
to write to a girlie I truly adore.
Signs oriental and scrawlings I'd draw her
and a dear little birdie with flourishes bold.
Then I’d be wanting, inks of more colours,
a bronze and a silver, a green and a gold.
More I'd be needing, hundreds and thousands,
still more to follow, a million or more:
wine-hued, and lilac, a grey that is muted,
chaste ones, some loving, some garish and loud.
I'd also be needing a sad-looking violet,
a brick-brown, a light one that's hinting at blue:
hues with which the door with the leadlight
lights up the doorway in August at noon.
And I'd be wanting the fiery bright blood-tones,
red ones like those of a sunset in anger,
and then I'd keep writing, never stop writing.
With blue to my sister, to mother in gold.
A prayer of gold would I write to my mother:
a golden fire, words golden like sunrise.
Ensconced in a tower, I'd write and keep writing
and never stop. I’d never be bored again.
Happy I'd be then, oh God, I'd be happy

colouring in my life with a pen.
