Kosztolányi Dezső: Susie (Zsuzsika in English)

Portre of Kosztolányi Dezső

Back to the translator

Zsuzsika (Hungarian)

Zsuzsika,
álmomba láttalak.

Világoskék ruhában álltál
a járda szegélyén,
a téli esőben,
kis utcai lány te,
szőke hajad koszorúba befonva,
búzavirágkék, tiszta szemednek
csillaga lángolt
s épen olyan voltál a sötétben,
mint ahogy álmodod önmagad ébren,
mint ahogy eldicsekedsz, mikor ittál:
«Mint egy vidéki
földbirtokos édes,
kis felesége.»

Ámde nyakadban
valami vastag
kendő fehérlett,
mint csitri leánynak,
hogyha a torkát
beköti anyja.

Ezzel jelezte
nyilván az álom
jelképisége
(és gyávaságom),
hogy mégse szerethetlek soha téged
s beteg vagy.

Ezt persze nem érted.
hisz még freudista sem vagy,
csak egyszerű, kedves,
jó utcai lányka.

De azt, ugye, érted,
hogy gyönyörű voltál?

Már egy hete minden vigaszom annyi,
hogy visszaidézem
álombeli szoknyád,
búzavirágkék,
nagy szemed, arcod,
torkod körül azzal a furcsa-lidérces,
tiltó lepellel
s ha járok az utcán, vagy irodalmi
vitákba veszek részt a dobogókon,
lehunyom a szemem,
hogy újra lássalak.

Susie (English)

Susie,
I saw you in a dream.

You wore a pale blue dress and stood
on the edge of the footpath
in winter rain,
you little street girl, you,
your blond hair platted into a wreath,
the clear, cornflower-blue of your eyes
were stars aflame
and you in the dark were just
as you dream yourself to be when awake,
just as you boast after drinks:
"Like the sweet
little wife
of a country squire."

But on your neck
there was the white
of a thick shawl
as on a slip of a girl
whose throat
had been covered by her mother.

With this symbol
the dream
(and my cowardice)
surely indicated
that I may never love you
and you are not well.

Of course, you cannot understand this
as you are not even a Freudian,
merely a simple, dear,
good little girl of the street.

But you do surely know
that you were a delight?

This past week my only consolation
has been that I recollect
your skirt from the dream,
the cornflower-blue
of your big eyes, your face,
and that nightmarish, forbidding shroud
around your throat,
and when walking on the street or taking part
in literary discussions on rostrums,
I close my eyes
to see you again.
