Ladányi Mihály: The pocket song (Zseb - dal in English)

Zseb - dal (Hungarian)

Volt egy ember, ki megtudta naponta
a rádióból és a hírlapokból
milyen boldog lesz itt az utókor
kolbászból lesz a lépcsőházi karfa
és ó, egek
egész hegyek, egész hegyek lesznek szaloncukorból.

S szólt az ember: ezt mind most akarom,
máskülönben nincs igazság a földön,
már az időm nem naplopással töltöm
a nap helyett ezentúl mást lopok
és ó, egek
a szót a tett, a szót a tett követi itt a földön.

a problémát a lapok is megírták
nagyobb zsebeket követelt az ország
és jött a zsebszabályzási rendelet
és ó, egek
megnőtt a zseb, megnőtt a zseb és eltűnt benne az ország.

The pocket song (English)

A man had daily heard it on the airwaves
and read it in the papers that were handy:
future folk will have things fine and dandy,
banisters in stairwells will be sausages...
Heavens, what thrill!
Whole mountains will, whole mountains will be made of sugar candy.

The man spoke up:  I want all this right now.
There is no justice if not straightaway,
I'll not be idling throughout the working day,
but spend my time on stealing things instead.
Heavens decreed,
that word and deed, that word and deed, should follow like night the day.

The news had spread: such things weren't frowned upon.
With this as reason, the place collectivised,
for there were no jobs or offices devised,
where many a theft would not occur each day.
Heavens, the chore!
Mountains galore, mountains galore were pocketed away.

Arose a problem: pockets were too small.
The papers ran with it, proclaimed it as a goal
that the nation demanded bigger ones for all
Came pocket laws to regulate the size and,
heavens forgive!
Pockets grew big, oh yes, grew big, they swallowed the country whole.
