Orbán Ottó: Föltámadás

Portre of Orbán Ottó

Föltámadás (Hungarian)

Három évig játszott velem egy házimacska,
tanított arra, amire Lear királyt a lányai.
Most a föltámadás egérútján hajszol a gyógyszer –
verset, ami nem vers, hanem élet;
a remény ezredszer is bolondot csinál belőlünk,
s lyukas vödrünkkel nekiállunk kimerni a világóceánt.
Élek. Fölöttem a Nap kerek tigrispofája,
s a vérszagtól remegő bajusz, a sugarai.

Resurrection (English)

For three long years the tom-cat played with me,
and taught me what his daughters taught King Lear.
Now drugs drive me towards my resurrection
on routes preferred by mice - with parked cars either side
treading each other down. It's Hungary and 1984.
Just one more minute, one more day, one year...
It's what every founder of religion says.
When I twigged that life was more important than verse
I thought that I could manufacture gold,
poems that were not verse, but life entire;
a thousand times we've played the fool, believed it
and tried to shift the ocean with holed buckets.
I live. The sun above me has a tiger face,
its beams are whiskers trembling. They scent blood.
