Halak sírása (Hungarian)

A nádas parton elmerengve lestem,
Horgászbotom a zöld habokra hajtva.

Csak most értem a néma jajveszéklést
S a testetlen könyűt a halszemekben.

S most érzem csak, hogy zokogván kiáltok:
„ Ó enyhülést adj, Isten, Isten, Isten! ”

The tears of fish (English)

I stood there musing beside the reedy shore,
Pole at the ready, where the green waters lie,
And as I pulled a bream up from the water,
Its lips were gaping, it gazed with empty eye.

Those eyes had not shed teardrops on my fingers,
It had not moved my heart with a soundless bawl,
But had it been a deer I hunted, wounded,
With teary eyes, I'd never have coped at all.

So, nothing could lessen my zest for angling,
Caught many a fish, my satchel filled with ease.
Not one of them, whilst shedding tears, accused me
By shouting at me: "Water! A mouth-full please!"

Only now, as the hook of pain tears into me
And I twitch, helpless, within that evil net,
Do I truly grasp the soundless cries for help,
And bodiless tears in fish eyes... and regret.

I feel it only now as I shout in tears:
"God, oh God of mine, do grant me some relief",
How would it be for one to wait for mercy,
And have no teardrops, not even cries of grief?
