Pilinszky János: Noon (Dél in English)

Dél (Hungarian)

Örökkétartó pillanat!
Vad szívverésem alig győzi csöndjét,
csak nagysokára, akkor is alig
rebben egyet a meglepett öröklét.

Majd újra vár, latolva mozdulatlan,
vadállati figyelme ezt meg azt,
majd az egészet egyből átkutatja,
nyugalmával hol itt, hol ott nyomaszt.

Egy házat próbál végre messze-messze,
méternyire a semmiség előtt
megvillogtatja. Eltökélten aztán,
hirtelen rá egy egész sor tetőt!

Közeledik, jön, jön a ragyogás
egy óriási közérzet egében -
Céltalanul fölvesz egy kavicsot,
és félrenéz a hajdani szemérem.

Mi látnivaló akad is azon,
hogy megérkezik valahol a nap,
és ellep, mint a vér, a melege,
hogy odatartott nyakszirtemre csap -

Emelkedik az elragadtatás!
Várakozom. Növekvő fényességben
köztem, s egy távol nádas rajza közt
mutál vékonyka földi jelenlétem.

Noon (English)

That everlasting moment!
My racing heart its stillness hardly bears,
much later on, and barely then,
eternity trembles when caught unawares.

Once more it waits, - wild beast's attention-,
it ponders this and that with care,
then in a single sweep surveys it all,
and its calm depresses here and there.

At last it tries a house set in the distance,
a metre from the void as it would seem,
to give it a flash.  And after that, determined,
it quickly causes a row of roofs to gleam.

The brightness comes, approaches ever nearer,
crossing the giant skies of mood, a ray
picks out a stone to spark without a reason
and former shyness looks the other way.

The moving sun - what is to see in that? -
it arrives somewhere along its track,
fills me with the warmth of coursing blood,
and when it's offered, falls upon my neck?

Ecstasy rises! I stand in growing brightness,
and with the waxing light, the waiting,
between me and some distant scribbled reeds
my wispy earthly presence is mutating,
