Pilinszky János: Kráter

Portre of Pilinszky János

Kráter (Hungarian)

Találkoztunk. Találkozunk.
Egy trafikban. Egy árverésen.
Keresgéltél valamit. Elmozdítasz
valamit. Menekülnék. Maradok.
Cigarettára gyújtok. Távozol.

Leszállsz és fölszállsz.
Fölszállok és leszállok.
Cigaretta. Lépkedel. Lépkedek.
Egyhelyben járunk; mint a gyilkos
a járásodban gázolok.

Madárcsicsergés ahogyan
szememre veted születésem.
Azt, hogy itt állunk. Majd egy útszakasz
holtágában a motyogásom
gurulni kezd, legördűl óriás
tagjaidról és ama diadalmas
és vakító valamiről,
ami már nem te vagy.

Úgy érint elutasításod,
ez a parázna, kőbeírott suhintás,
hogy tekintetem - két kavics –
azóta is csak gurul és gurul
egy hófehér kráterben. Két szemem,
két szem pattog: az üdvösségem.

Crater (English)

We used to meet. We keep meeting.
At a tobacco shop. At an auction.
You searched for something. You remove
something. I’d run away. I stay.
I light a cigarette. You leave.

You get off and get on.
I get on and get off.
Cigarette. You walk. I walk.
We don’t move ahead; like a murderer
I wade in your steps.

A bird chirping is the way you
reproach me for my being born.
That we stand here. Then in the backwater
of a road-section my mumbling
starts rolling, it falls off from your giant
limbs and off that triumphant
and dazzling something
that’s not you any more.

I feel your rejection,
this wanton swishing set in stone so
that my eyes – like two pebbles -
have been rolling ever since
in a white crater.  My eyes,
two eyes snap: my salvation.
