Pilinszky János: Van ilyen

Portre of Pilinszky János

Van ilyen (Hungarian)

Cseléd akartam lenni. Van ilyen.
Teríteni és leszedni az asztalt.
Ahogy az áldozat föllépked
és a hóhér lejön a dobogóról.

Most az emelvény fokai között
betűz a nap, és ugyanaz a nap,
mintha senkit se vittek volna fel,
ki nem jött vissza. Csönd akartam lenni
és dobogó. Lépcső közé szorult világ.
Senki és semmi. Hétvégi remény.

That Happens (English)

I meant to be a servant. That happens.
To set and then to clear the table.
The way the martyr steps up, and
the hangman comes down the scaffold.

Now between the stairs of the stand
the sun shines in, and it’s the same sun,
as if no one had ever been taken up
who then didn’t come back. I meant to be silence
and scaffold. World stuck between stairs.
Nobody and nothing. Weekend hope.
