Reviczky Gyula: Two geese (A két lúd in English)

Portre of Reviczky Gyula
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

A két lúd (Hungarian)

Egy vadlúd s egy szelíd liba
Közt folyt az itt leirt vita.
Nagy gágogással,
Szárnycsapkodással
Azt magyarázgaták idestova,
Kinek van kettejök közt jobb sora?

»Szegény rokon, neked bőven kijut
Bajból, teherből« - szólt a házi lud.
»Te nyugtalan, kóbor madár,
Másutt talál az ősz, másutt a nyár.
Fagygyal, viharral, bősz szelekkel
S éhséggel is, hajh, küzdened kell!
Sehol sincs nyugtod, maradásod,
Rád lesnek vérszomjas vadászok;
S mikor nem is várod, nem képzeled,
A gyilkos cső kioltja életed.
Én vígan élek és nyugodtan
Gond nélkül, tömve, jóllakottan.
Van bőven moslék és kukoricza;
Meghízik tőle a liba.«

»Nem írigyellek, húgom, érte,«
Igy válaszolt a vadlúd e beszédre.
»Te szolgaságban töltöd életed;
Azért hizlalnak, hogy leöljenek.
Mikor már alig vonszolod magad,
Elmetszi a szakácsné a nyakad.
Legyen bár harcz, veszély minden napom;
Szabadon élek vándorútamon
S ha majdan gyilkos cső terít le:
Nem végzem éltem gyávaságban, mint te.«

Melyik lud mondott igazat?...
A kövérebb-e vagy a szabadabb?...

Two geese (English)

One wild and one domesticated
Goose were arguing elated.
They honked of things
With slapping of wings
And were expounding in words goosy, terse,
Whose life was better and whose was worse.

"Poor kin of mine," the tame goose said,
"A surfeit of burdens and strife you had,
You, restless bird - such errant ways -
You're here in summer, gone by autumn days.
The frost, the raging storm, the angry squall,
And hunger, too. You fight them all.
Nowhere at peace, you're always on the go,
Bloodthirsty hunters track you from below;
And, when least expecting such things to be done,
Your life is ended by a killer gun.
I have a calm and merry life to lead,
No worries plague, they stuff me full of feed,
There's plenty of swill and corn to please
This goose and make her quite obese."

"Sister, I envy not, I'll tell you why,"
Honked the wild one in reply.
"You spend your life as servants will,
They fatten you just for the kill.
And when you barely move or bend,
Cook cuts your throat and that's the end.
Though battles and strife, do fill my day,
'Tis free I fly upon my way,
And should a gun take me to my final breath,
mine won't, like yours will, be a coward's death.

Which argued best, which spoke the truth?...
The fatter or the freer goose?...
