Sík Sándor: Snow on the heights (Hó a hegyeken in English)

Portre of Sík Sándor

Back to the translator

Snow on the heights (English)

The summer, fragrant with hay, had slept with us last night.

By morning autumn snows covered each mountain height.

"This summer, too, had flown", Mother is saying now,

And wince as I note life's autumn-snows covering her brow.

She looks at me, her lips move, silently she prays,

Then gently smooths my dark brow tinged with hoary greys.
