Szép Ernő: Stretching (Nyujtózás in English)

Portre of Szép Ernő
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Nyujtózás (Hungarian)

Ha egy nő rátenné fehér kezét

Ránccal rajzolt vén homlokomra,

Milyen más lenne: ifjú, tiszta, szép.

Hajamnak jégvert, letört kaszálója

Sűrű és illatos fűtenger volna,

Ha öt vékony ujj lengene közé.

Ha sétálhatnék egy hölgy oldalán,

Kényes hegedűkhöz hasonlón

Leesett fejem hátra tartanám.

Szólnék a nőhöz: szép forró beszédek,

Amilyeneket álmomban beszélek.

Langalnának megaludt ajkamon.

Aj, hogyha látnám, látnám szemtől-szembe,

Mint a csillár a bálban, ugy fölzengne

Szegény le nem zárt két halott-szemem.

Stretching (English)

If only a woman's milk-white hand would

Smooth out the wrinkles on my ageing brow:

How different, filled with youth and beauty, clean.

That hail-beaten stubble, which once was my hair,

Would turn into oceans of lush, fragrant grass

If slender fingers would swing in-between.

If only I could walk beside a lady,

I would, as one does, with a fine violin,

Throw back my drooping head and hold it high.

Hot words I'd use, words brimming with beauty,

Like those I use when speaking in a dream.

My sleeping lips would kindle into flame.

Oh, if only I could see her eye to eye,

That would - chandelier-like - bring bursts of light to

My poor dead eyes that no one deigned to close.
