Szabó Lőrinc: Forget-me-not (Nefelejcs in English)

Portre of Szabó Lőrinc
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Nefelejcs (Hungarian)

A virágokból először a kék

nefelejcs tetszett: azt a szép nevét

külön is megszerettem, hogy olyan

beszélgetős és hogy értelme van:

szinte rászól az emberre vele,

úgy kér (s nyilván fontos neki, ugye,

ha kéri?), hogy: ne felejts! Többnyire

jól hallottam, egész világosan,

égszin hangját, néha meg én magam

sugtam, vagy nem is sugtam, csak olyan

nagyon vártam már, hogy tán a szívem

szólt helyette vagy éppen a fülem:

ilyenkor nem tudtam, képzelem-e

vagy tényleg csalok, neki, a neve

mondásával?… De még ha csalok is,

nyugtattam meg magamat, az a kis

segítség semmi, hisz úgy szeretem;

s dehogy felejtem, nem én, sohasem!

Forget-me-not (English)

Ranked first among my fancied flowers came

the blue forget-me-nots, I liked the name,

but what I liked the most, had thought was best:

the name has meaning, it is a request

which puts you in your place, demands of you

(and seems to think it's crucial that you do):

"forget me not"!  I mostly heard that well,

the voice was sky-blue, clear as any bell,

at other times, I may have whispered it,

or maybe not, or maybe longed a bit

to let my heart help, or perhaps my ear,

to speak for it or maybe just to hear:

was it my mind's imagination game?

Or conscious cheating, did I say the name? ...

If I cheated, that help was surely small

I so consoled myself - no help at all,

for I so love it…  I will never let

that name slip from my mind, I won't forget.
