Szabó Lőrinc: The sea (Tenger in English)

Portre of Szabó Lőrinc
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Tenger (Hungarian)

Egymás alatt s egymás felett

s egymásba nyilva meztelen

omlásban, mint ha testtelen

hangok érkeznek süppeteg

s oly földöntúli szerelem

lelkével lüktetik tele

a levegőt, hogy a zene

megszületik a semmiben,

egymás alatt s egymás felett

s egymásba nyílva mindig új

vágyban, mely lankadtan borúl

uj s uj szomjakkal telitett

ölelkezéseikbe, hol

ezer mozdulat egyesűl

s kielégíthetetlenűl

szétválik s újra egybefoly,

egymás alatt s egymás felett

nyitódva és csukódva szent

törvény szerint, mert messze bent,

bent is kitárják testüket,

úgy ringva-úszva kívül és

belül, hogy minden tétova

mozdulatuk csók és csupa

egymáson átbujt ölelés:

hullám alatt s hullám felett

örök-sóváron s meztelen

hullámok úsznak, testtelen

gondolatok, szerelmesek,

forrón, buján, reménytelen,

hullámok végtelen sora,

boldogtalan hullámok a

szerelmes tengeren.

The sea (English)

Beneath each other and above,

entwining naked each with each,

as when disembodied

soft voices come and fill the air

with such a throbbing spirit

of otherworldly love,

that they give birth

to music in the void,

beneath each other and above

and embracing, connecting with ever new

desires, which languidly sink

into their ever new

thirst-filled embraces, where

movements by the thousand unite

and separate unsatisfiably,

then flow as one again,

beneath each other and above,

opening, closing as holy law

decrees, for far within

they also spread their bodies,

floating, swimming, outside and within,

in such a way that every move becomes

a kiss, an embrace that passes

right through the one receiving it:

beneath the waves and above,

the naked, ever eager

waves are floating, bodiless

thoughts, lovers:

hot, wanton, unrequited,

an endless queue of waves:

unhappy waves,

upon the sea in love.
