Utazás háború után (Hungarian)

Iramodó sinekkel iramodom,
a vonat reszket, szinte lángol,
csábitva csattog a kerekekben
az örök igéret, a távol.

Te voltál, kedves, az első,
akitől bucsuzni fáj;
de mennem kell, az élet minden
kincse és titka vár.

Mindent akarok – Óh, a tenger
a Kárpátokon, Alpokon túl!
Siessünk! Sín, nyargalj velem;
aki vak volt, most látni indúl!

Aki rab volt, érzi: szárnya nőtt.
Bőgj, mozdony, sors kereke, lángolj!
Ezer életet akarok – van! van! – és
mit kaptam én még a világból?

Rab voltam. Szemeim jussa a Föld,
csak ellopta valaki tőlem –
Most vége: sineim kifutottak
s leborulnak a hidak előttem.

Journey after war (English)

I scamper the scampering rail,
the train shakes with flaming resistance,
tempting, with clatter of wheels,
the endless promise of distance.

You, dear, you were the first,
from whom it was painful to part;
Life's treasures and secrets await,
I have to be off, to depart.

I want what is lying beyond -
Carpathians, Alps, an oh, the sea!
Hurry on rails, let's gallop along;
one, who was blind, is eager to see!

One, who was captive, feels his wings.
Howl engine, howl! Fate's wheel spin to fire!
There are a thousand lives to be had, and
yet this world gave nothing I desire.

I was a captive. Someone stole my world -
the birthright of my eyes - so let there be
an end: my rails have borne me out, and
bridges, as homage, lie down before me.
