Szilágyi Domokos: Dawn (Hajnal in English)

Portre of Szilágyi Domokos
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Hajnal (Hungarian)

A csönd lüktet a félhomályban,
hulló lombokat ringatón,
szépségektől terhesen,
mint ahogyan ver a szívem.
Hajnalodik - a nappal ásít
álom-ittasan, fél-éberen,
akárcsak én; - táguló tüdejébe
szívja a kocsonyásan-remegő ködöket,
s mint az ember szeme,
- ha könnyíthet lelkén,
gondjai kevesbednek -,
lassan tisztul a táj.

Várom, hogy mozduljon a hajnal,
friss lendülettel lépjen
a világosság felé,
a hajnal is vár engem.
Farkasszemet nézünk. Tétovázunk,
biztatgatjuk egymást.
Nehéz az első lépés,
csábító a kába álom.

De aztán mégis: egymásra nevetünk,
s megindulunk vidáman, kéz a kézben,
mint szerelmesek,
hogy huszonnégy órán keresztül
gyűjtsük az erőt és a kedvet,
amellyel holnap - újrakezdjük.

Dawn (English)

Silence throbs in the twilight,
it rocks the falling greenery
gravid with beauty,
as does the beat of my heart.
Dawn breaks - besotted with sleep,
the day yawns and much like I:
just half awake, - inhales the jelly-wobbling mists
into his expanding lungs,
and as the human eye does
- worries decline
if the soul is eased -
the landscape slowly clears.

I wait for the dawn to move,
with swinging step
to walk towards the light,
the dawn also waits for me.
We stare at each.  We vacillate,
keep encouraging each other.
Hard is the first step,
enticing is the daze of sleep.

But then we smile at each other
and start to walk cheerfully, hand in hand,
like lovers,
to gather the strength and inclination
over twenty-four hours,
with which tomorrow we will - begin again.
