Tóth Árpád: I, God's broken cello, shall be silent (Isten törött csellója, hallgatok in English)

Portre of Tóth Árpád
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Isten törött csellója, hallgatok (Hungarian)

Én csönd vagyok. Itt ne keress zenét.

Olyan vagyok én ebben a világban,

Mint az a gordonka, amelyet láttam

Egy szép úri szobában, a sarokban.

Húrjai elpattantak. A nyakán

Gyászfátyol van átvetve, néma flór.

S mégse volt érzelgős tárgy. Némi por

Fedte már. Megbékélt évek pora.

Oly fájdalom volt rája írva, melynek

Már csöndje a szent, mint a remetének,

Ki elfelejtett beszélni az évek

Magányában, - s cellája küszöbén.

Míg elkallódott életébe réved,

Már nem emlékszik régi bánatára:

Csak mintha némi fínom, messzi pára

Vérezné be a dús alkonyatot,

És tenné szebbé, istenibb titokká,

Melyhez nem illik más, csak némaság.

Üvöltsön hát a szájas sokaság,

Isten törött csellója, hallgatok.

I, God's broken cello, shall be silent (English)

I am the silence. Seek no music here

For in this world, my all, my very being,

Is like the cello I remember seeing

in the corner of a handsome drawing room.

The strings were broken. A veil of mourning

Was draped around it, dumb habiliment,

Yet not a thing of mawkish sentiment.

The dust on it was dust of settled years.

Its voiceless pain was one which surely reaches

Sacred domain, the silence of the hermit,

Who through the years of loneliness would forfeit

His speech and in the doorway of his cell,

Musing a daydream about his life mislaid,

Would not remember his hurting grief of old;

As if far vapours would gently rise, unfold,

To paint with blood the sunset's opulence,

Make it more splendid, more divine a secret,

Which ill befits all else but being mute.

So let the crowds roar, insolently hoot,

I, God's broken cello, shall be silent.
