Miért? (Hungarian)

Ablakomban, szürke esten,
Üldögélek, semmi kedvem,
Munka nélkül, tétlenül
Sok, sok percem elrepül.

Porbelepte, satnya ágra,
Szirmasíró, bús virágra
Nézek némán, hidegen,
Árva sorsuk mit nekem!

Lelkem üres, puszta, fásult,
És a perc mindegyre száguld,
Míg egy sápadt alkonyon
Itt kell hagyni ablakom...

S a halál szól irgalommal:
"Ne vesződj már szívbajoddal,
Jégkezemmel szeliden
Megsimítom, s elpihen."

Akkor vadul felsikoltok:
Nem akarok lenni boldog,
Élni, élni, akarok!
Miért? balga, bús titok!

But why? (English)

My window seat, a greying eve,
Nary a joy, nary a peeve,
Nothing to do, an idle day.
Countless moments fly away.

Outside branches, stunted, hoary,
Blossoms mourning former glory.
Silently, detachedly,
I see a shared destiny.

My soul is empty, barren, wan,
The moment rushes on and on,
’Till one sunset's fading start
I'm told: “go!” and I depart…

Then death his caring voice will raise:
"Fret not over your heart's malaise,
All your ills I'll gently cure
With my icy hand for sure."

On hearing this, I wildly scream
That happiness is not my dream.
I want life! The life I had!
But why? A secret, foolish, sad.
