Tompa Mihály: To the stork (A gólyához in English)

Portre of Tompa Mihály

A gólyához (Hungarian)

Megenyhült a lég, vídul a határ,
S te újra itt vagy, jó gólyamadár!
Az ócska fészket megigazgatod,
Hogy ott kikölthesd pelyhes magzatod.

Csak vissza, vissza! meg ne csaljanak
Csalárd napsúgár és síró patak;
Csak vissza, vissza! nincs itt kikelet,
Az élet fagyva van, s megdermedett.

Ne járj a mezőn, temető van ott;
Ne menj a tóra, vértől áradott;
Toronytetőkön nézvén nyughelyet,
Tüzes üszökbe léphetsz, úgy lehet.

Házamról jobb, ha elhurcolkodol,
De melyiken tudsz fészket rakni, hol
Kétségbeesést ne hallanál alól,
S nem félhetnél az ég villámitól?

Csak vissza, vissza! dél szigetje vár;
Te boldogabb vagy, mint mi, jó madár.
Neked két hazát adott végzeted;

Kik élünk, járunk búsan, szótlanul;
Van aki felkél, és sírván, megyen
Új hont keresni túl a tengeren.

A menyasszony meddőségért eped,
Szüle nem zokog holt magzat felett,
A vén lelke örömmel eltelik,
Hogy nem kell élni már sok ideig.

Beszéld el, ah! hogy ... gyalázat reánk!
Nem elég, hogy mint tölgy, kivágatánk:
A kidült fában őrlő szú lakik...
A honfi honfira vádaskodik.

Testvért testvér, apát fiú elad...
Mégis, ne szóljon erről ajakad,
Nehogy ki távol sír e nemzeten:
Megútálni is kénytelen legyen!

To the stork (English)

The air is mild and winter at an end,
And you are here again, good stork, old friend,
Cleaning the place where last your homestead stood,
To make it ready for your downy brood.

Go back, go back, good stork, get up and fly –
The sun, the singing streams, are all a lie;
Go back - no spring is here, no summer’s breath,
And life itself is frozen, chilled to death.

Avoid the fields, avoid the lake in flood –
Meadows are graves, the lake is filled with blood.
You must not seek a tower when you tire -
It may conceal the remnants of a fire.

It is not safe for you to stay … But where
Is there a house unravished by despair?
And if you moved your nest and placed it high,
A thunderbolt might strike you from the sky.

Go to your southern isle - so warm, so free.
Good stork, you are far happier than we:
The Fates gave you two lands to call your own;
We have - we had - but one … and that is gone.

If you encounter on a southern shore
The fugitives who have a home no more –
Tell them we perish and decay with grief,
Our nation scattered like and untied sheaf.

Many in prison meet their final doom;
Those living - walk in silence and in gloom;
While others rise still weeping from their knees,
And go to find a home beyond the seas.

Here for a barren marriage prays the bride,
No parent grieves over the child that died;
The old alone feel comforted at heart,
Because they know that soon they will depart.

And tell them too … Oh what a shame to tell!
We were cut down - the oak not only fell –
The death-worm grinds it now and makes it rot,
And patriot betrays his fellow patriot.

Brother sells brother. Father sold by son …
Yet keep quiet, do not pass this on,
Lest those who mourn us - far away, at ease –
Despise and hate us like a foul disease!
