Utassy József: My fire, my blaze (Tüzem, lobogóm in English)

Portre of Utassy József

Tüzem, lobogóm (Hungarian)

KÉREM! én eddig hallgattam csak,
mert jól tudom, mi lesz a sorsa
a szeleburdi szilvafákon
kék csillaggá robbant rügyeknek.

Mondják, mikor az ózdi kórház
műtőjében Kiss Margit megszült:
barkát borzolt a szél, s az utcán
kizöldültek a vasporos fák.

Ám alighogy a réz kilincset
lábujjhegyről – így ni! – fölértem:
ifjú házunk szemét kilőtték,

s lekalimpált a kis kakukk is.
Anyám összesöpörte az időt,
én meg kidobtam a szemétre!

My fire, my blaze (English)

Please! so far I have remained silent
because I well know what fate awaits
those buds which exploded to blue stars
on giddy plum trees over yonder.

They say that when Margit Kiss gave birth
to me at the hospital at Ózd,
wind ruffled catkin, and in the street,
iron dust covered trees were greening.

But just as I - on tiptoe like this -
barely reached the handle on the door,
the eyes of our young house were shot out.

The wee cuckoo wobbled down as well.
Then my mother swept up time, and I
have disposed of it all in the trash.
