Weöres Sándor: Adagio (Adagio in English)

Portre of Weöres Sándor
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Adagio (Hungarian)

Szállnak a vadlibák, szállnak,
a gyermekláncfü kelyhe becsukódik,
bugyrot cipel a nénike,
édesem messzire ment.
Megkérdezzem a nénikétől:
hova ment az édesem, hova ment?
Csak a vadlibák láthatják meg őt -
csak a gyermekláncfü szólhatna róla.
A csókod festi kékre az eget,
szemed szinétől zöldülnek a fák.
Nélküled üres minden képkeret
és világtalan az egész világ.
Multkor a kertembe egy fiu jött,
gyümölcsöt hozott a kosarában.
Kék ruhában jött, mint a napsugár,
kék ruhád eszembe jutott.
Csupasz volt a nyaka íve...
mosolygott... nézett hosszasan...
Gyümölcsöt hozott. Mind fanyar volt,
a madaraktól kérdezd, hova lett.
A csókod festi kékre az eget,
szemed szinétől zöldülnek a fák.
Nélküled üres minden képkeret
és világtalan az egész világ.
De rég nem láttam két szemedet!
s hogy fölébredtem egyszer éjjel,
a bokorról két mérges bogyó
bámult rám, sötét a sötétből.
De boldog voltam én veled!
s egy kövér ember jött szembe az uton,
bő volt nekem a köpenye,
bő volt neki a bánatom.

A csókod festi kékre az eget,
szemed szinétől zöldülnek a fák.
Nélküled üres minden képkeret
és világtalan az egész világ.

Adagio (English)

The wild geese are flying, flying,
the calyx of the dandelion is closing,
the old woman carries a bundle,
my sweetheart went far away.
Should I ask the old woman:
where did my sweetheart go, where did she go?
Only the wild geese could catch sight of her -
only the dandelion could speak of her.
Your kiss is painting the sky blue,
the trees are greening from the colour of your eyes.
Without you all picture frames are empty
and the whole world is blind.
The other day a youth came into my garden,
he brought fruit in his basket.
Came clad in blue like the rays of the sun,
I remembered your blue dress.
The curve of his neck was bare…
he smiled…  he gave a long look…
Brought fruit. It all was tart,
ask the birds where it went.
Your kiss is painting the sky blue,
the trees are greening from the colour of your eyes.
Without you all picture frames are empty
and the whole world is blind.
For so long I have not seen your eyes
and as I woke one night
two poisonous berries from the bush
stared at me: dark from the darkness.
But I was happy with you!
and a plump man came towards me on the road,
his cloak was too large for me,
my sorrow was too large for him.

Your kiss is painting the sky blue,
the trees are greening from the colour of your eyes.
Without you all picture frames are empty
and the whole world is blind.
