Radauskas, Henrikas: Simple songs (Paprastos dainos in English)

Portre of Radauskas, Henrikas

Paprastos dainos (Lithuanian)

Kai aš prisimenu anas dienas,

Rašau be galo paprastas dainas:

Apie auksinį tėvo gryčios stogą

Ir apie derlių, gerą arba blogą.

Ten kaip žiedai margavo aviliai,

Lietus į žemę sunkėsi giliai.

O žmonės gimė, sėjo, pjovė, mirė,

Juos kirto laikas, o jie kirto girią.

Bet jie žaliavo, kaip ir ta giria,

Ir jie dainas dainavo vakare,

Pareidami iš lauko į namus,

Ir švietė jiems saulėlydis ramus,

Ir suko girnas jiems galingas vėjas,

Vyresnis brolis, jiems padėt atėjęs.

Simple songs (English)

When I think back to days gone by

I write these infinitely simple songs:

About the gold roof on my father's shack,

our haul in crops, both good and bad,

Where beehives bloomed in various shades

And the soil really sopped up rain.

With people born to sow and mow and die there,

Time laid them low, as they'd cut down the forest,

Grown vivid green along with the timber

And singing songs, in the evening,

On the way back from fieldwork,

With sundown glowing calm

And a mighty wind to turn their mills,

The big brother dropping by to pitch in.
