Herzberg, Judith: The kiss between (De zoen tussen flotsam en jetsam in English)

Portre of Herzberg, Judith

De zoen tussen flotsam en jetsam (Dutch)

De zoen
op het strand
ging op zoek
naar een mond
tussen peuken
broodkorst (nat)
de stokjes
van lollies
en de schil
van een water-
meloen.

Maar de zoen
vond een aai
zonder hand
zonder wang
een grap
zonder oor
en een geur
zonder neus
een scharnier
zonder deur
een kier
zonder raam
plastic fles
zonder brief
zonder traan.

En gekrijs
van geen meeuw
met geen weet
van hoe lang
zo een juttende
zoen overleeft
aan de ebbende zee
op het fronsende
zand.

The kiss between (English)

The kiss
on the beach
went in search
of a mouth
among cigarette butts
crusts of bread (wet)
the sticks
of lollies
and the skin
of a water-
melon.

But the kiss
found a caress
without hand
without cheek
a joke
with no ear
and a smell
with no nose
a hinge
with no door
ajar
with no window
plastic bottle
with no letter
with no tear.

A screech
of no gull
with no knowledge
of how long
such a beach-combing
kiss will survive
by the ebbing sea
on the frowning
sand.
