Cvetajeva, Marina:

Portre of Cvetajeva, Marina

(Russian)

Daniel (English)

I sat on the windowsill, with my legs dangling
He then asked me quietly: Who’s there?
- It is I that came – And why? – I do not know.
- My child, it’s rather late and you’re not sleeping.

I saw the moon up in the sky,
I saw the moon, I saw its beam.
It pushed against your window, -
And perhaps, that’s why I’m here…

O, tell me why they named you Daniel?
I keep on dreaming of you mangled by the lions!

Daniel: In the Bible, Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den for worshiping God, when it was outlawed to worship anyone other than King Darius for a 30 day period. Daniel was saved by an angel who shut the mouths of the lions.
