Dučić, Jovan: A Willow By The Sea (Morska Vrba in English)

Portre of Dučić, Jovan

Morska Vrba (Serbian)

Sama vrba stoji nad morem na steni,

Rasplela je kosu zelenu i dugu;

Nalici na nimfu koju su prokleli

Da postane drvo i da sumi tugu.

Slusa pesmu gora kada jutro rudi,

Agoniju vode u veceri neme;

Nepomicno stoji tamo gde sve bludi;

Oblaci i vetri, talasi i vreme.

I tu sumi s njima, dajuci polako,

Moru koju granu, vetru listak koji;

I, k'o srce, sebe kidajuci tako,

Tuzno sumi zivot. - Sama vrba stoji...

A Willow By The Sea (English)

The top of the world is a willow by the sea,

Its plaited leaves are long, green, fanned,

Resembling a nymph who has been damned

To become a rustling, melancholy tree.

She hears the mountain song at sunrise,

The sea's agony during silent evenings.

She stands transfixed amid promiscuous things:

Clouds and wind, and waves and time.

And she whispers to them, slowly yielding

a leaf to the wind, a branch to the sea,

And like a heart being torn apart, breaking,

Sadly rustling with life. A willow by the sea...
