Ekelöf, Gunnar: Melancholia (Melancholia in English)

Portre of Ekelöf, Gunnar

Melancholia (English)

I look around and reckon my victories,
so few, and my defeats, so many more…
In dream landscapes, where the dust still hovers
from marches as fleeting as far,
where no one gives battle and no one declines,
I see them bleaching, the many bones
of the cohorts of wishes, that have been mine…
At the river at last… To be rocked back and forth
by these waves, free from the thorns of desert visions,
sudden springs that die away, having forgotten
the answers to all questions, the unease of growing,
the anguish of decrease, these waves
which whelm their glass vaults over the strand,
to be washed out and in among these stones,
which lie gray, bedded in the sand
at this border, that divides and joins
those left and those never-attained realms,
is all I wish — like these dead boughs,
like these hulks of ships gutted by flame,
like these bodies blackened and burned out…
To be carried away until the shores have gone.
Neither to turn nor return.
Neither to have lost nor won.
—The great retreat is done.
