Křesadlo, Jan: The Calling (Povolání in English)

Portre of Křesadlo, Jan

Povolání (Czech)

Je tomu skoro padesát už let:
šel chlapec labyrintem vnitřních tišin,
a jiskrooký lyšaj Paraklét
zavířil křídlem, snes se k němu z výšin.

Do jeho srdce sosák namířil
a dal mu plamen, podobenství nová,
a chlapcův zrak se divně rozšířil,
když prvně v sobě slyšel zpívat slova.

A potom slyšel: „Budeš jeden z nás“
- to mrtví k němu promlouvali jemně -
„nic víc, než další zpěvný, sladký hlas
té hořké, hořké, hořké, hořké země.“

 „Tvůj úděl bude, že máš zůstat skryt,
půlnoční básník, o němž nikdo neví:
několik srdcí jenom bude znít
tvým ozvukem a ponese tvé zpěvy.

Tvým pérem bude můří tykadlo,
tvým pergamenem netopýří blána,
a měsíc bude tvoje zrcadlo
a tvoje růže - skrytá v srdci rána.

Tak budeš chodit nocí zahalen,
král Ječmínek s korunou krásné věty,
v předsíních kostelů a kořalen
pokvetou tvoje básně jako květy.

Proto's byl vyvolen a povolán
aby ses zjevoval a opět tratil,
abysi sedal k stolům nevolán
a chléb a víno mincí veršů platil.

Souměrný, za každého počasí
zkoveš jim píseň, která nemá věku,
ve které sídlí lampa bezčasí:
o luně, lilii a dívčím vděku.

A proto milovat tě bude lid
a mudráci tě nikdy nezachytí,
ti, které kryjí fráze jako štít
a kterých se tvá duše tolik štítí.

Nevědí, u fontán, že do mísy
vždy nová voda proudí, tvarem stejná,
že lidská duše k veršům voní si
v světě, kde páchne krev a hnis a lejna.

Že praví básníci se neperou,
jak žádá lidská věda ušmachťaná,
s andělem, s bohem, ani s příšerou,
že je jim píseň prostě shůry dána.

Že růže vzkvetlé v této hodině
jsou stejné jako vždycky: stejně krásné;
že platí to o každé květině,
nad kterou vždycky znovu člověk žasne.

Tak mimo čas a mimo prostoří
přebývat budeš v nekonečném nyní
a proto urážka či příkoří
tě nezasáhne ani nezašpiní.

A vynoříš se tam a opět tam
v písni, jež napsaná už ztratila se
z pamětí lidí. Ty však budeš sám
bez těla sídlit v této země hlase.“

The Calling (English)

A day some fifty years ago gone by:
Calm’s inner labyrinth a boy was strolling,
when down a Moth came whirring from the sky
with sparkling eyes, whose Greek name speaks of Calling.

To the boy’s heart his proboscis he plied
the fire of fresh metaphors injecting;
Then grew the young lad wondrous wider-eyed
as words burst into songs on introspecting.

And then he heard: “One of us wilt thou be.”
- the Dead addressing him in gentle metre -
“No more than one new sweet-voiced melody
of home earth bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter.”

 “To remain hidden is thy destiny,
Midnight’s own poet, remaining unbeknown:
A few lone hearts will sound the harmony
and take thy Song resounding forever on.

Let Moth-antenna serve thee for a Quill;
For Parchment take the flight-membrane of a Bat;
Thy Mirror’s role roundly the Moon shall fill
The Rose - a heart in secret with wounds beset.

Thus wilt thou walk, robed in a cloak of stars
King Barleycorn - crowned with fine wording braided;
In anterooms of chapels, noisy bars
thy poems blossoming their blooms unaided.

Summoned up, this purpose to enable
appearing briefly, only too soon going
uninvited, visit at each table
for bread and wine to pay, coin verses glowing:

Clad impervious to gusts diurnal
thy Song, once wrought, embodying timelessness,
lucidly within, the Lamp eternal
the Moon, the Lily, young maidens’ Gracefulness

And so the common folk will hold thee dear -
unlike Cognoscenti, who won’t comprehend -
shielded behind their empty phrases’ sneer;
thy Soul revulsed, too shy to apprehend;

They do not see, just as do Fountains vent
water forever fresh - Form replicating,
so human souls would rather verses scent
than worldly stenches; blood, pus, defecating;

That true-life Poets do not turn to rant, -
forward by grubby human science driven -
to tear down Monster, Angel, Sacrament,
reverent simply to what has been given;

That roses, whose buds open at this hour,
being like before are just as beautiful
and likewise, that every other flower
being true to form appears as wonderful.

Thus, outside space and time’s imprisonment
live, renaissant in present infinity;
To wrongful treatment, insult, detriment
immune - far out of range of such enmity.

And thou wilt rise, emerging there and here,
in song whose written form has long ceased hiding
in human memories. But wilt appear,
bodiless, in thy Homeland’s voice residing.”
