Grass, Günter: Prophets' Fare (Prophetenkost in English)

Portre of Grass, Günter

Prophetenkost (German)

Prophets' Fare (English)

When locusts occupied our city

no more milk reached our houses, the newspaper choked,

the prison cells were opened, the prophets set free.

Now they moved through the streets in procession,

3800 prophets. They could speak with impunity,

and eat their fill of that jumping, gray surface cover

that we called the plague.

Who would have expected any other outcome -

Soon the milk came back to us, the newspaper

found its breath, prophets filled the prison cells.
