Davie, Donald: Szünetek egy tevékeny életben (Intervals in a Busy Life in Hungarian)

Portre of Davie, Donald

Intervals in a Busy Life (English)

’Room for manœuvre,’ I say,
’I ask for an undertaking.’
Manœuvring, king-making…

Only when death happens
Do I see the tops of the trees
Out of my attic window,

And they are always there:
They have looked on the death of my friend
And on my father's death.

They are the deathly markers;
And thereby, even, when leafless,
Green; ungrudging sources

At which, as at holy springs,
One does not drink
Habitually nor lightly.

Filling the intervals
Without propriety
Itself is reverential.

Szünetek egy tevékeny életben (Hungarian)

„Mozgásteret!" - Ezt fújom,
Cselekedni, mozogni szeretnék,
Ha királyt trónjára tehetnék…

Csak néha, halálesetekkor
Látom a fák tetejét
Kicsi padlásablakomból,

Pedig ott őrködnek örökké:
Látták meghalni barátom,
Nézték, mint hal meg apám -

Hiszen ők a halál figyelői;
Zöldek hát lombtalanul is.
Buzgó források e fák mind,

De akárcsak a szent vizekből,
Nem iszunk mi gyakorta belőlük,
S nem iszunk sohasem szivesen.

Ha kitöltjük a szüneteket,
Miknek nincs jellegük, ez már
Áhitat önmaga is.
