Gom, Leona: Nővér (Sister in Hungarian)

Portre of Gom, Leona
Portre of P. T.

Back to the translator

Sister (English)

She is holding my hand

but I can’t remember it,

whether it was something automatic

like smiling for the camera

or whether our mother had to say

take her hand, come on.

Mostly we remember

who hit who first,

who was pushed off the sled,

who tattled to father,

all that stale history still

squashed between us 30 years later.

It becomes easier every year

to think it is too late,

we are too different now,

the letter at Christmas as much

as there will ever be.

But still I return to the old albums,

touch the glassy photographs

with their secrets sealed in.

My fingertips find the two small faces

I want to forgive, find

the sister holding my hand.

Nővér (Hungarian)

Ő fogja a kezem

de nem emlékszem rá,

vajon ez valami automatizmus volt

mint mosolyogni a kamerába

vagy tán anyánknak kellett mondania

fogd meg a kezét, gyerünk.

Jobbára emlékszünk

ki üt ki az első,

ki lökte el a szánkót,

ki pletykált apának,

az egész lejárt történet mégis

összetorlódik köztünk 30 évvel később.

Könnyebbé válik minden évvel

elgondolni; már túl késő,

mára túlságosan különbözőek vagyunk,

a levél karácsonykor majdnem olyan

mintha ott lenne mindig.

De mégis visszatérek a régi albumokhoz,

megérintem az üvegezett fényképeket

titkaikkal miket bezárnak.

Ujjbegyeim két kis arcra találnak,

megbocsátásra vágyok, rátalálni

a nővérre ki fogja a kezem.
