Bukowski, Charles: Posta (the mail in Italian)

Portre of Bukowski, Charles
Portre of anonim

Back to the translator

the mail (English)

the mail gets heavier.

more and more letters telling me

what a great writer I

am,

plus poems, novels, novelettes,

short stories, paintings.

some just want an autograph,

a drawing, a word.

suggest an ongoing

correspondence.

I read everything, dump every-

thing, go about my

business.

I am aware that no man is

a "great" writer.

he may have been a

great writer,

but it's a process which

begins again and over

again

and all the praise,

the cigars, the bottles of

wine sent in

honor

will not get the next

line down,

and that's all that counts,

the past is

useless,

now is in the laps of

the gods

as the centuries fall

away

in their rotten

swift

luxury.

Posta (Italian)

la posta aumenta.

lettere su lettere per dirmi

che grande scrittore

che sono,

e poesie, romanzi, novelle,

racconti, ritratti.

qualcuno chiede solo un autografo,

un disegno, una parola.

altri propongono una corrispondenza

permanente.

io leggo tutto, butto tutto,

faccio i miei

affari.

so bene che nessuno è

un"grande"scrittore.

può esserlo

stato,

ma scrivere è un'impresa

che ricomincia da capo

ogni volta

e tutti gli elogi,

i sigari, le bottiglie

di vino inviate

in tuo onore

non garantiscono

come sarà la riga successiva,

e soltanto quella conta,

il passato è

inutile,

siede sulle ginocchia

degli dei

mentre i secoli

svaniscono

nel loro marcio

celere

sfarzo.
