Inkala, Jouni: Phantom Pain (Aavesärkyä in English)

Portre of Inkala, Jouni

Aavesärkyä (Finnish)

- W.H. Audenille –

Entäpä jos selkäkipu on kerran omistamamme hännän
aavesärkyä. Niskan kolotus selkäpanssarin.
Hartioissa kiehuva särky siipien
etenkin pitkän kirjoitusrupeaman jälkeen.
Entäpä jos hiuksemme ovat sulkien, karvamme
untuvien sukua ja kavioiden tilalla
litistyivät painomme alla lättäjalat.
Korvien paikalla loistivat kidusten punaiset
pornoluolat. Voiko siis olla, että menneisyytemme
oli ruotojen viitoittamaa. Että liu´umme
huomaamattamme kohti jatkoaikaa. Nykymerien
aaltoja ja tyyntä. Sillä emmehän voi tietää
millä tuulella matalapaineet vielä työskentelevät.
Kuka osaa kertoa miksi siirtyisimme kahdelta
jalalta yhden varaan, miksi pakaralihaksemme
kasvaisivat kiinni polvitaipeisiin ja miksi saisimme
nähdä päivän, jolloin äidit ovat munankuoria
joiden sisällä lapset syntyvät ja kasvavat, kunnes
uudelleen säädetyssä täysi-ikäisyydessä kuoriutuvat.

Phantom Pain (English)

– For W.H. Auden –

What if backache is phantom pain of the tail we once
possessed? Our necks ache for the long gone carapace.
Our shoulders are simmering especially after
a long writing session, sore with the lack of wings.
What if the hair on our heads is descended
from feathers, body hair from pile? Has our weight
pressed our hooves into flatfeet? Have our ears
replaced the red porn caves of gills? So is it possible
that our past was marked out by fish bones?
And we were, unawares, sliding towards extra time.
Towards the waves and calm of contemporary oceans.
After all, there is no way of knowing
which winds still power the cyclones.
Who can tell why we would shift from two feet
to one, why our gluteal muscles would join
the backs of the knees and why we would live
to see the day when our mothers are egg shells,
inside which babies are born and raised, until they
hatch in their newly decreed majority?
