Huotarinen, Vilja-Tuulia: The girls (Tytöt in English)

Portre of Huotarinen, Vilja-Tuulia

Tytöt (Finnish)

Tytöt ovat karanneet.

                     He kävelevät päät pystyssä

rantaan, heidän hansikkaansa ovat valkeat

valmiiksi muotoillut lupaukset,

joista he yli kaiken haluavat vapaiksi.

Yli kaiken he tahtovat rypistää

sinisen kalvon joka viettelee

kävelemään vetten päällä.

                         Tytöt tietävät mitä on tehtävä

kun horisontti näkyy.

Tytöt ilmoitetaan kadonneiksi, nuoruus menetetyksi

                            He nauravat päin kasvoja,

tarttuvat paljain käsin hohtavaan kankaaseen

ja puhkovat saksilla silmänreiät sen läpi,

rikkovat pinnan heijastuksen, täydellisen ihon.

The girls (English)

The girls have escaped.

                    Stiff-necked, they walk

to the shore, their gloves are white

pre-formulated promises they

want to free themselves from, more than anything.

More than anything they want to crumple

the blue silk that entices them

to walk on water.

The girls know what has to be done

when the horizon comes.

The girls are pronounced lost, their youth forfeited.

                    They laugh into people's faces,

with bare hands they grab the gleaming fabric

and scissor holes into it,

break the surface reflection, the perfect skin.

* Poem from a book “Must not run with scissors”
