Rab Zsuzsa: In my abandoned city (Otthagyott városomban in English)

Portre of Rab Zsuzsa

Otthagyott városomban (Hungarian)

Valaki énhelyettem ittmaradt.
Elcseréltem vele a sorsomat.
Futamoz álmosan a zongorán,
temetőbe sétál ki délután,
gyereket pólyáz, szekrényben matat.
Valaki énhelyettem ittmaradt.

Az énnekem szánt sorsot pergeti.
Ezt a kisutcát hagytam itt neki,
ezt az ecetfát nyarai felett,
hitvesi ágyat, dombos szigetet,
halálig-biztos társat hagytam itt,
ki ősszel rá meleg kendőt terít,
keresztelőket, temetéseket,
boros-toros, bő nevetéseket,
víg névnapokat, apró gondokat,
sereg rokont, derék utódokat,
lángok-falta, vad esztendők helyett
tisztes nyugalmú, hosszú életet,
s csak néha egy névtelen sajdulást:
ezt akarta - vagy mást? Valami mást?...

Valaki énhelyettem ittmaradt.
Küszöbére csempésztem sorsomat.
Ha tudna rólam, hogy gondolna rám?
Nem merek benézni az ablakán.

In my abandoned city (English)

Someone remained in my place.
I swapped with her my fate.
Sleepily plays riffs on the piano,
by the cemetery for afternoon stroll,
swaddles child, rummages closet space.
Someone remained in my place.

She’s spinning the fate destined for me.
I left for her this little street,
this vinegar tree for her summers,
matrimonial bed, island with hills,
I left her a trustful partner until death,
in fall who wraps her in shawl for warmth,
baptisms, funerals, gathering
wine-high, abundant laughing,
holidays, small problem involvements,
host of relatives, valiant descendants,
instead of years lived in flame-consumed, wild,
decent life, long, respectable, calm, mild,
and only rarely an unstated distress:
this is it – or else? Or something else?

Someone remained in my place.
On her threshold I deposited my fate.
How would she think of me, if she knew?
I don’t dare look through her window.
