Ady Endre: The Lord’s coming (Az Úr érkezése in English)

Portre of Ady Endre
Portre of Bernard Adams

Back to the translator

Az Úr érkezése (Hungarian)

Mikor elhagytak,
Mikor a lelkem roskadozva vittem,
Csöndesen és váratlanul
Átölelt az Isten.

Nem harsonával,
Hanem jött néma, igaz öleléssel,
Nem jött szép, tüzes nappalon
De háborús éjjel.

És megvakultak
Hiú szemeim. Meghalt ifjúságom,
De őt, a fényest, nagyszerűt,
Mindörökre látom.

The Lord’s coming (English)

Desolate, I felt

That my soul in fragments would fly asunder,

And then God’s arms enfolded me,

Quiet and sudden.

Not with trumpet-call

Came He, but soundlessly, with a true embrace,

In not the blazing light of day

But the night of unrest.

Stricken sightless were

My vain eyes, my innocent youth was no more,

But Him, the Glorious, the Great,

I shall see ever more.
