Ady Endre: 'Adam, where art thou?' (»Ádám, hol vagy?« in English)

Portre of Ady Endre

»Ádám, hol vagy?« (Hungarian)

Oszlik lelkemnek barna gyásza:

Nagy, fehér fényben jön az Isten,

Hogy ellenségim leigázza.

Az arcát még titkolja, rejti,

De Nap-szemét nagy szánalommal

Most már sokszor rajtam felejti.

És hogyha néha-néha győzök,

Ő járt, az Isten járt előttem,

Kivonta kardját, megelőzött.

Hallom, ahogy lelkemben lépked

S az ő bús »Ádám, hol vagy?«-ára

Felelnek hangos szívverések.

Szivemben már őt megtaláltam,

Megtaláltam és megöleltem

S egyek leszünk mi a halálban.

'Adam, where art thou?' (English)

Brown around my soul now parts the woe:

A great white light - tis God arising

That He may cast down my every foe.

His face He still keeps unrevealed, veils,

But His Sun-eye with great compassion

Upon me often lingering dwells.

And He, my God, has gone before me

When I have sometimes met with triumph,

Has drawn His sword and prevented me.

Within my spirit I heard His feet,

And to His sad 'Adam, where art thou?'

I made response with pounding heartbeat.

Now I have chanced on Him in my heart,

Chanced upon Him and embraced Him there,

And in death we shall not be apart.
