Nemes Nagy Ágnes: About God (Istenről in English)

Portre of Nemes Nagy Ágnes

Legalább ne tettél volna annyi csalogatót a csapdába. Ne csináltál volna felhőt, hálát, aranyfejet az őszi akácnak. Ne ismernénk a vékony, zöldes, édes-édes ízt: a létét. Irtózatos a Te édes lépvessződ, Uram!

Tudod te, milyen a vércukorszint süllyedése? Tudod te, milyen a leukoplákia halvány kicsi foltja növőben? Tudod te, milyen a félelem? A testi kín? A becstelenség? Tudod-e, hány wattos fényerővel tündöklik a gyilkos?

Úsztál folyóban? Ettél citromalmát? Fogtál-e körzőt, téglát, cédulát? Van körmöd? Élő fára vésni véle, kriksz-krakszokat hámló platánra, míg megy odafönt, megy-megy a délután? Van odaföntöd? Van neked fölötted?

Egy szót se szóltam.

About God (English)

Our greatest deficiency disease

Face it, my Lord, this is not right. Not the right way to create. Placing such eggshell-Earth into space, such eggshell-life on Earth, and in it - as an unconceivable punishment - consciousness. This is too little, this is too much. This is miscalculation, my Lord.

Why do you wish us to squeeze a whole universe into our palm-size child’s-toy cranium? Or you make the same with us as with the acorn, in which you squeezed a whole oak tree?

I wouldn’t treat my dog like You treat me. Your very being is not scientific, but a moral impossibility. Assuming Your existence as creator of such a word: is blasphemy.

At least you shouldn’t have put as much bait into the trap.  You shouldn't have created clouds, gratitude, golden crown to the autumn acacia. I wish we had not known the fine, green, sweet-sweet taste: of being. Your lure is hideous, my Lord!

Do you know how a drop in blood sugar feels? Do you know the growing of the faint, little patch of leukoplakia.  Do you know fear? Physical pain? Dishonesty? Do you know the shinning bright wattage of a killer?

Have you ever swam in a river? Have you ever tasted a golden apple? Have you ever held a compass, a brick, a piece of paper? Do you have fingernails? Engraving on living trees, drawing doodles on motley sycamores, while the afternoon is passing-passing by up there. Do you have Your “up there”? Is there higher for You?

I did not say a word.
