Pilinszky János: Trapeze and Parallel Bars (Trapéz és korlát in English)

Portre of Pilinszky János

Trapéz és korlát (Hungarian)

Sötéten hátat forditasz,
kisikló homlokodra
a csillagöves éjszakát
kezem hiába fonja.
Nyakad köré ezüst pihék
szelíd pilléi gyűlnek,
bizalmasan belém tapadsz,
nevetsz, – vadúl megütlek!

Sugárzó párkányon futunk,
elgáncsolom a lábad,
fölugrasz és szemembe kapsz,
sebezhetetlen állat!
Elszűkül arcod, hátra buksz,
vadul zuhanni kezdesz,
az éjszaka trapézain
röpűlsz tovább, emelkedsz

a rebbenő való fölé!
Kegyetlen, néma torna,
mégcsak nem is kiálthatok,
követlek szívdobogva,
merészen ellököm magam,
megkaplak és ledoblak,
elterülünk hálóiban
a rengő csillagoknak!

Most kényszerítlek, válaszolj,
mióta tart e hajsza?
Megalvadt szememben az éj.
Ki kezdte és akarta?
Mi lesz velem, s mi lesz veled?
Vigasztalan szeretlek!
Ülünk az ég korlátain,
mint elitélt fegyencek.

Trapeze and Parallel Bars (English)

Gloomily you turn your back.
In vain my hands weave
the star-studded belt of night
on to your forehead.
Around your throat cluster the gentle
moths of silver fluff.
Intimately you cleave to my body
and laugh. Savagely I hit you.

We run along a radiant ledge.
I trip you, you bound up
snatching at my eyes -
invulnerable beast!
Your face sharpens, and you drop away
backwards,
start to plunge wildly, flying
on the trapeze of night and rising

above the flutter of reality.
A silent ruthless gymnastics.
I cannot even cry out.
With hammering heart, I follow
hurl myself recklessly
and catch your body and fling you down.
Helpless we land in the net
of the quivering stars.

Now I force you to answer:
when did this hunt begin?
Night has clotted in my eyes.
Who started it? Who wanted it? What
will happen to me? What will happen to you?
I love you unconsoled.
We crouch on the sky's parallel bars -
like convicts condemned.
