Ratkó József: Fall (Ősz in English)

Portre of Ratkó József

Ősz (Hungarian)

Szakállas, öreg esők járják az utakat. Ősz van.
Telnek a tavak, az árkok edényei: piros levelek
ringatóznak, ragyognak a vízen,
mint levesben a zsír csöppjei. A nyár
könnyű lábnyomát elmosta már a vihar. Telet szül
lassan az elnehezült szél. Árnyék didereg
a fal tövében. S elcsöndesült a Nap,
mint ingbe dugott madár.

Szép ez a világ! Örülni, énekelni
akarok most, gondjait hát elejtem.
Csillognak a fény krajcárkái: zöld,
piros, seszínű üvegcserepek.
Szabad vagyok - s ez is öröm. Az idő
nem parancsolhat nekem.
Törvényeit betartom, ismerem:
öregszem engedelmesen -
de nincs szívemben félelem,
szememben nincs alázat.
Nem tántorít fortély, se rontás:
magamból a rosszat kivetettem.
Az idő meg nem alázhat engem.
Kegyeiért nem tülekedtem,
s nem is fogok.
Fütyörészve végzem egyetlen
dolgomat: énekelek,
amíg tudok.

Fall (English)

Bearded, old rains walk the roads. It’s fall.
Lakes fill up, vessels of ditches: red leaves
twitch, glow in the water
like drops of fat in a soup. Summer’s
light steps were washed away by the storm.  Winter’s born
slowly to the rough-footed wind. Shadow shivers
at the foot of the wall. And the Sun calmed down,
like a bird tucked in a shirt.

Wonderful world! Now I want to
rejoice and sing, so I let problems go.
Little pennies of light glitter: green,
red, no-colour chips of glass.
I’m free – also a source of joy. Time
cannot dictate to me.
I keep its laws, I know them:
I’m getting old obediently -
but there’s no fear in my heart,
and no humility in my eyes.
Neither guile, nor charm distract me:
I’ve thrown out of myself what’s bad.
Time cannot humiliate me.
For its favour I’ve never jostled,
and I never will.
I keep whistling and do my
only job: I sing
as long as I can.
