Jékely Zoltán: To my bones (Csontjaimhoz in English)

Portre of Jékely Zoltán

Csontjaimhoz (Hungarian)

Mindig úgy éldegélek, mintha holnap
örökre elaludnék, s álmatag
nézem csontjaim, kik velem loholtak,
s kiket lelkem csúful magukra hagy.

A koponyám mázsás agyag súlyától,
száz év se kell, háromfelé reped,
belészivárog egy tavaszi zápor
s kimossa a porrávált verseket.

A fogaim, miket húsz-harminc évig
koptattak ételek, martak savak,
a fogaim kicsorbult sora fénylik
időtlen időkig a föld alatt.

Gerincemet, melyben csak úgy ropogtak
a csigolyák és lüktetett a vér,
ha majd odvából a velő kirothadt,
felfűzi egy kígyó vagy egy gyökér.

Szegény kezem, kit annyit szimatoltam,
miután testeken motozgatott,
hogy visszaintsél annak, aki voltam,
szegény kezem, nem mozdulhatsz meg ott!

S ti lábaim, sebes, vad agaracskák,
akik leányok lábát szorították
s felhők alá rúgtátok fel a labdát –
örökre megmereszt a síri hapták.

To my bones (English)

I live my life from day to day as if
about to sleep for ever, dreamily
watching bones that have jogged along with me
and which my soul's so rudely set to leave.

My skull which has been of little or no use
this hundred years under its weight of clay
now cracks in three, a spring shower sweeps away
dusty heaps of poems like so much refuse.

My teeth corroded over twenty years
by rich food, eaten through by acids, glow
uncannily in row by rotten row
under the earth, sad timeless souvenirs.

My spine, with its length of crackling vertebrae
through which blood pounded, now the marrow's gone
is hollow, perhaps a snake might try it on
or roots provide a line to dangle by.

My poor hand, which I used to love to sniff
after it had explored another's skin,
no use you beckoning to the man within,
poor hand, for you, like him, are trapped and stiff.

And you, my legs, young puppies, you who'd squeeze
a female leg, or kick a football high,
for ever at attention now you'll lie
nor graveyard sergeant give you the At ease.
