Juhász Gyula: To time (Az időnek in English)

Portre of Juhász Gyula

Az időnek (Hungarian)

Idő, örök öreg, ki messze, fenn
A végtelen szikláján ülsz magad

A hulló őszi lomb a lomha légben
S az elmúlás halálhozó ködében
Szívemből szálló sóhaj dallama?

To time (English)

Time, ever old, high on your distant throne,
Upon forever's crag, you ancient one,
You sit, observe in silence and alone,
Passage of eons, of the years, the sun.

You only watch how oceans, blood, a tear,
And water move with tides that rule the brine,
You watch the joust when light and mist appear,
The flow of worlds and moments in decline:

Time, ever old, what would result, do tell,
If you would only slumber for a spell,
And end this game which seems to halt immune:

Fall's leaves in languid air that leave the highs
And wing through deadly mist that brings demise,
Is that my sighing heart that hums a tune?
