Rúfus, Milan: Highlanders (Vrchári in English)

Portre of Rúfus, Milan

Vrchári (Slovak)

Vysoko si nám, Bože vysoko
položil stôl. Kým dočiahneme naň,
potíme krv a soľ z nás uteká.
Soľ, na ktorú nám často nezvýši.

Povýšili nás, Pane Ježiši.
Ach, áno, povýšili človeka.
O mieru kríža, čo ho neminie.
Dosť je tu stromov naň
i na kolísky.

Môj prísny kraj, môj krutý,
ach, môj blízky!
Košeľa zrebná, prilepená k telu
storočným potom.

Už ju nezložím.
Už pôjdem v nej. I dolu ležiačky.
Zospodu hrabať tvoje zemiačky.

Highlanders (English)

High up, O Lord for us
You placed the table high. Striving to reach,
we sweat blood and the salt from us flows.
Salt, for which often we have nothing surplus.

They raised us up, Lord Jesus.
Ah, yes, they raised up man.
By a cross, which will not pass away from him.
Threes enough for it here
and cradles too.

My severe land, my cruel
ah, my true!
Coarse-linen garment, plastered to the body
with sweet of hundred years.

From now on I´ll wear it always.
Even downwards, laid out, when I go.
To rake up your potatoes from below.
