Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,

He was my North, my South, my East and West,

My working week and my Sunday rest,

My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last for ever; I was wrong.

Umlčte telefón, tikaniu hodín zaveľte dosť,

Zabráňte štekaniu psa, dajte mu šťavnatú kosť,

Stíšte klavír a bubny nech tlmene znejú,

Vyneste rakvu, trúchliaci nech idú.



Nech lietadlá nad hlavou krúžia úpenlivo,

Zvesť na oblohu čmárajúc Halí Ho Večné Ticho,

Krepovými stuhami ozdobte krk mestských holubíc,

Dopravným policajtom nasaďte pár čiernych rukavíc.



Odišiel môj Sever, Juh, Východ a Západ,

Môj pracovný týždeň a môj nedeľný súlad,

Moje poludnie, polnoc, hudba a rozprávanie;

Láska je večná, myslel som si, no nie je.



Preč s hviezdami, teraz ich všetky zahaste;

Nechcem ten mesiac a slnka ma zbavte;

Vylejte oceán a odstráňte les,

K dobrému nič nezvráti sa dnes.
