Mosoly (Magyar)
Smile (Angol)
I am going to die. Not so very long from now.
This makes me light-headed, like in my youth
the first few morning drags did on the balcony
when I began to smoke.
That feeling passed, of course,
as had so many other things.
Except for one which remained;
may God be thanked for that!
The eye's hungry, greedy curiosity,
the pleasure of looking, that every view,
though different, is a colour joy:
tar and dribbled honey
and a boiler-room's twisting pipes
covered in fibreglass and foil have equal beauty.
Or the turquoise silence of a tarn among blue pines
and the glassy cold of the air. The meaningless, rattling,
hither and yon flight of an empty, discarded
cigarette box urged along by whims of changing wind
along the concrete of the pavement. The smile
on the face of a small, faded frump with shrivelled gums,
the tear in the corner of her eye which clings like yellow resin,
as well as the smallish double chin of a firm-fleshed maiden,
the white of her teeth, of which,
she shows a tad too much.
None of this matters: the headspring,
the spice of beauty is - the blemish.
Working women's legs with varicose veins
and fishwives' half-frozen, purplish-blue hands made slippery
with carp blood and catfish slime are no exception -
Because the angel inhabits the detail
