Dinescu, Mircea: A Drinking Binge with Marx (O beţie cu Marx Angol nyelven)

A Drinking Binge with Marx (Angol)

Venerable Marx, had you lived in these lands
You would soon have been shaven clean
And sent to a school for re-education.
Even cows from the East
Which grazed near the railway line
Thinking that they are locomotives
Have stopped giving milk:
The blame for this is to be laid at your door.
Too bad that the cities are not ruled by merchants
So that the marketplace should not stink of rhetoric.
Free the brewers, the pastrami makers, the milkmen
Full of the dialect of fermented hops
And of hardened cheese!

Many a farmer would now gladly take his scythe
To the green sepia of the punks heads.
Now, believing you dead,
The new philosophers get drunk on the conviction
That they challenge you.
They lack the daring to smell the fermenting yeast
And throw society into disarray
Or start the distillation
Which soon made of revolutionary Cohn Bendit
An affable mayor.

I myself, an ordinary soul,
Am emerging like a slug from the syntax and the logic
To dream up a stomach virus
Which could make a man drunk on a piece of bread.
Come, taste it,
We are on the right course
In Berlin the clocks are going haywire.
